Work, School and Adoption

I started school again last Wednesday. It is going to be a fantastic semester! I am taking Anatomy and Physiology. Before you comment that I'm crazy for taking these two classes together- I already know! It is going to be a lot of hard work, let there be no mistake about it but I have great professors and my sister and I are taking the classes "together". By together I mean she is also taking the classes at the same school (Salt Lake Community College) but from different professors so we will be able to bounce ideas off each other and study together- at least a little bit.

JD continues to stay busy at work and with the freelance jobs that he works on from home. He is such a hard worker and I appreciate him so much. He is such a wonderful provider and support to me. He is constantly studying new programming languages that will help add depth to his skills and make him more marketable. He plans on returning to school eventually and getting his Master's degree in Computer Science. He likes the program at BYU so it's a good thing we live in Utah County- at it appears we will be for awhile. As of now, it will probably not happen until I am done with my nursing degree or until he finds a job that has tuition reimbursement to help pay for the cost.

And finally...we are thrilled and anxious to be meeting with LDS Family Services on September 7 for an adoption orientation meeting. That's right we are going to adopt. We aren't sure what to expect except that we will get the paperwork to start filling it out. It can take up to a year and more to have a child placed but we are looking forward to the road ahead and the experiences we will have and the opportunity to meet birth mothers and welcoming a baby into our home.

I have the unique opportunity to occasionally take care of birth mothers placing their babies for adoption at the hospital and it never short of extraordinary seeing the love those women have for their babies and what a sacrifice they are making to give those children a better life. I am so grateful that adoption is an option for us and that we will be starting the process soon. So with all of that said we would appreciate your prayers and letting anyone you may know that we want to add to our family through adoption.

Until next time...

Winding down

I guess it's time for an update since it has been two weeks since I posted anything new. Things are starting to wind down it seems like. I have only 5 weeks of school left and 3 clinic shifts. I can't believe I am that close to graduation and being a licensed therapist. This past week was a rough one though I must admit. I had to re-take a final from last quarter (Trigger Point), a mid-term (Injury) and another final (Structural) this week. I am so glad this week is over.
I am happy to report I passed my Trigger Point final this go round. I technically had a passing grade last time but you have to have at least a 70 on the test or you have to re-take it and I missed the mark by 4 stinking points. Now the practical, hands on test...I breezed through it with a perfect score...I hate written tests it seems I always flub them up for some reason. My one complaint about re-taking a final is no matter how well you do on it you can only get a C in the class at that point...ANNOYING but on the flip side I didn't have to re-take the entire course so I'm not going to throw up a stink about that.
My Injury mid-term was a beast!!! I studied my little heart out but didn't feel confident after taking the test- it was only a practical and the instructor is quizzing me while I'm working on my client...yeah that isn't intimidating at all!!! I just about passed out when I saw the grade posted yesterday and I got a 94 on the mid-term...WOWZA was I excited! I have to admit I understand now why the classes are given at certain points in the program. If I had to know the stuff for Injury that I do and hadn't taken anatomy or pathology I would be up a creek for sure. So 5 more weeks and it's the final. I'm actually really glad I know how they test now so I will be more prepared for my final. It to is just a practical exam and my goal is 100 percent and confidence following the exam.
My Structural final was bittersweet to say the very least. I was glad to be done with a class so finals week isn't such a beast but it is my favorite class. J.D. could almost tell in my voice when I had structural class because I loved it so much. I would have traded other classes for more of structural. Don't get me wrong, it isn't an easy modality, actually you have to be more precise in your strokes but the benefits to the client are incredible and I really want to focus my work in this area. I would love to work as TA with Taylor sometime in the future but he requires a couple of years in the field first, which I totally respect and understand. Taylor has to be one of my favorite instructors. This guy knows his stuff, is straight forward about what we needed to know, how we needed to perform the work but also a riot in class. I had so much fun with him... don't worry Taylor I'll say a little prayer for you!! Oh yeah and I got an A in the class... HOORAY!
Now on to the wedding... We are just 50 days from our wedding and I can hardly believe it. I gave the final approval for the invitations today and I LOVE them! We should have them by the middle of the week of the 16th (I hope). One of my projects this weekend is getting the address labels ready so it isn't such a nightmare stuffing and sending them when they do come in.
I also had my first fitting for my dress today. I just love putting it on...I feel like such a princess when I have it on. I will pick it up on the 20th and have it for my bridal pictures on the 28th. I was given a deadline of the 28th by my photographer to take bridals so we can have them ready for the wedding and reception on the 28th of March...plus I must admit I'm kind of excited I get to have formal pictures taken with my lovely dress on so I can enjoy it and not worry about if everyone is having a good time at the reception and if they are comfortable, etc. Who knew I was such a princess??!!
Our photographer, Scott Jarvie, this guy rocks! I love his work and we have worked out a great deal with him so we are getting every kind of bell and whistle with our photography package. Let's just say I am grateful that J.D. is a programmer and Scott is happy to do trades. We are shooting our engagement pictures tomorrow and can't wait to see how they turn out. Scott has a helper, Julie who is just fantastic as well. I have only been able to speak to her on the phone thus far but I already like her and her work. They are both so concerned that our pictures reflect who we are. I, of course, told them I'm a farm girl and anything outside and country like will suit me just fine and J.D. too of course. I can't wait to see the location they have picked out for us tomorrow. I will post pictures once I'm able...or just be watching your mailbox we will be including a picture with the invitations and come to the reception you will get to see plenty there too.
The reception planning is coming along pretty well. I appreciate the Historic Shelton for all of their help. I just mention in passing that I need to find someone for something and they make a call to one of their contacts and we get things set up. I have to figure out the DJ and the final food for the reception and I think we are set. The one item that I am worried about now are the tuxedos. I know that these shops do this long distance business all the time but I haven't and I want to make sure everyone looks nice.
Oh and one more thing...I am moving out of my apartment on the 16th of February. Our lease is up on the 28th but I want to have it cleaned and done before then so we are moving on the 16th. I can't wait to be moved out and one step closer to being able to see my J.D. every night. Although that will still be several weeks away I'm going to be living with my friend Carla for the time between vacating the apartment and getting married and he is just 15 minutes from J.D. rather than nearly 40...much nicer for both of us.

Yep things are definately winding down but the good stuff is just about to begin. I can't wait to start our married life together. I am so proud of J.D. and the man that he is. I learn more everyday just how much I have been missing from my life without him there and I can't imagine spending the rest of my life with anyone else.

Until next time...

Clinic Internship

We started our clinic internship two weeks ago.  After the first week, I really wanted someone to just put me out of my misery.  I never realized how hard giving 4 massages could be on my body.  I left the clinic after week one nearly in tears. My wrist was on fire and ached like nothing I have ever felt before. I was assured by the clinic instructor that my wrist would be fine and just needed to be iced.  She also told me my body being sore was normal for a couple of weeks and then I would be acclimated to the work and be fine.  I had my right wrist on ice until last Tuesday and babied it all week at work so it wouldn't go into clinic this weekend sore.

I am happy to report that this week I could have easily given 5 massages if there would have been bodies available.   We have 2 for 1 massages going on right now and it helps bring people in but by the end of the shift the bodies are limited.  I was very careful watching my body mechanics this week and if I started feeling any discomfort I made adjustments to get rid of the pain.  It is still fascinating to me that my body being slightly off can cause so much discomfort.  It just is proof positive that our alignment is essential to our body functioning properly.  It seems obvious now that I think about it on a daily basis but I never thought about it before.

My movement class this term has really made me very aware of my alignment and overall structure and how we compensate for dysfunction in other areas of our body.  Additionally, this same class has made me very comfortable with my body.  I wasn't completely uncomfortable with it before but we have to wear viewing clothes in this class and a classmate evaluates our structure in these clothes and they have to be able to see our hip and shoulder joints so you can imagine the lack of clothing that is involved but we are covered enough to be comfortable.

This week brings the third term at UCMT to a close with finals.  Tomorrow night is Movement, Tuesday is Sports Massage, Wednesday is Anatomy and Thursday is Cranial Sacral.  The classes seem to be getting more difficult the further we get along in the program.  I think it is because we are getting more specific in what we are studying.  I still love school but I'm looking forward to being done and having a few nights a week free again.  We are down to 20 weeks which almost sounds like an eternity to me but 2 terms seems so fast because the last 3 have gone so quickly.

PS.  The offer still stands if you need a massage give me a shout.  I'm sure we can make it work for both of our schedules.

Until next time...

I love Idaho!!

There is nothing better than leaving the busy city behind and drivng to Idaho to spend time with my family. I absolutely love it here and for good reasons. I spend Friday afternoon and evening with my mom at Fort Hall. That is one of her favorite places and she convinced me I should go with her. I am opposed to gambling for a couple of reasons...1) I never win and 2) I hate the smoke in casinos. Well one of those wasn't true this trip. I actually did win...not a huge amount of money but enough to pay for my gas this trip home so given the current prices of gas I didn't do to bad either. The smoke however...YUCK!! I smelled like an old cigarette all the way to mom's house and my hair, clothes, etc smelled nasty the next morning. I did a quick load of mixed laundry before I left Saturday morning so everthing else it touched wouldn't have the same stink...EEEEWWW!!

Saturday I made the 3.5 hour drive from St Anthony to North Fork so I could spend the long weekend with my dad and Lisa. I LOVE it here. The hills are green, the trees are still in bloom and the river is beautiful. I got to help get my hands dirty and plant trees this morning with dad. You know it is such a simple thing but one of those little things you miss out on when you live in the city and don't have a yard of your own to play in. It's funny dad even said to me this morning when I was elbow deep in dirt and pitching rocks that were just too big..."You are a farmgirl you are just living in the city for far too long!" I love it! I won't have it being called a city girl. I love all of the culture of the city but I just love being away from it all and just relaxing or helping with those little projects that need to be done.

I just finished up my first quarter of massage therapy school and I'm pretty proud of my grades. I got four A's and 1 B. The B was in Anatomy and I'm determined to make sure I get an A next quarter and until I'm done with Pathology. Who am I kidding...I plan on getting A's in all of my classes from this point forward...no excuses. I keep reminding myself of the quote I had on my wall of my office in Phoenix that reminded me of the success I was requiring of myself..."Failure is NOT an option. However, it is a lingering possibility that keeps me focused on the tasks at hand!" From the first time I read that quote I loved it and I still do and it will help keep me focused on success in the professional massage program and through the Master's program after that.

Life really is good. I'm relaxing on the weekend, enjoying spending time with my family and look forward to the week ahead. I might add that next week will be especially wonderful because I get to spend the night with my nephews and grandma next Friday while Jared and Klar are at Youth Conference. I'm so excited!
Until next time...

PS I'm currently reading A Tree Grew in Brooklyn and it is fantastic. One of the many reasons I love to come to my dad's house- he always has a million books and I can always find something good to read.
